On November 7, 2006, history was made in New York and across our country. Americans, and the Democratic Party, found their voice again and they used it loudly and clearly. Voters realized that we must have a responsible government protecting all our interests so we can continue to prosper and to restore our tarnished reputation at home and abroad. Pound Ridge played a key role in that history making tidal wave of change.
Democracy, it is said, is inherently self-correcting. The results in Pound Ridge demonstrate this as no words ever could – regardless of party we all came together in support of our excellent Democratic candidates in very close races. Whether it was by volunteering, fundraising or participating in any way possible, many folks in Town and members of the Democratic Committee all pulled up their sleeves and got to work.
As a result of all of our hard work, we have taken back New York government at almost every level — Eliot Spitzer, Andrew Cuomo, and Adam Bradley will make a difference in our state government. Mike Kaplowitz won in Pound Ridge, fought a hard race, but did not prevail in the general election. In Washington, Senator Clinton will continue to be an effective voice for New York, advocating for our interests, issue after issue, and she will continue her proven leadership. In the Congressional race, Pound Ridge went for John Hall by a dramatic margin - 60 percent to 40 percent of the vote. It was a victory that many, including some in the Democratic Party said would not happen. The hard work and dedication of volunteers and a fortuitous moment in history, however, came together and folks in Pound Ridge helped spearhead this important victory.
Red and blue are the colors of our flag, and properly, they belong together as the symbol of our nation. Our colors were never meant to be a ‘mentality’ that divides us in the interests of a few. We did not become the nation admired by the world by being manipulated into divisiveness. We are all in this together, as folks in Pound Ridge realized as they rejected divisive politics and voted across party lines.
Early in the morning of November 8th, the world had been changed. We were a key part of the momentum that made it possible. Thank you for your support and for everything that was done by our Pound Ridge community to make these impressive victories possible. I am proud to be a New Yorker, and proud to call Pound Ridge my home. In the days ahead, remember that local elections in Pound Ridge are in November 2007, and with your help the winds of change will continue to be at our back.
